How do I keep my relationship status private on Facebook?

I'm currently in a relationship with someone and they want to make it "Facebook official". I, on the other hand, have a lot of people on my friend's list that I would rather not share that type of information with. I know how to keep it hidden on my profile; my question is, rather, if I only made our relationship status visible to certain friends, but his relationship status is visible to everyone, wouldn't someone who has both of us as friends still be able to view our relationship status from his profile? Is there a way to keep it private on both of our pages, aside from making him change his settings as well? Thanks in advance.
