I'm a military spouse, do I need a different degree to have a career?
So, my husband decided to join the military my senior year of college and went to bootcamp immediately after I graduated. I majored in a social science field with the intention of doing nonprofit work. We've been at our first duty station (Hawaii) for four months and I haven't had any luck landing a job despite a substantial work history, an internship, etc. under my belt. I've met with a career counselor on base who told me that I have excellent qualifications and a great resume, but my phone's not ringing. I'm starting to wonder if I should just go back to school for something more "portable" because it seems like most spouses who work are nurses, teachers, or have other careers that transfer easily. I really don't have any interest in the health care or teaching fields though, so I'd hate to go back to school for something I don't care about. Plus my guy doesn't even know if he's going to stay in the service. On the other hand, the military would help pay for me to go back to school so I'm afraid of not taking advantage of that opportunity. What bothers me the most is that going back to school would basically mean all the money and effort I put into earning my BA was a waste. I just don't know what to do. Any milspouses out there have advice?
