Donations/grants available for individuals?

I am fundraising to study for a semester in Germany, through the well-known nonprofit organization AFS. I've checked on a few websites like McDonald's, and they make donations to corporations but not individuals. Does anybody know of companies that make charitable donations to individuals, or hold scholarship/essay contests? Thanks so much. :)
